Definition of Hard Skills and How to Apply Hard Skills?

Hard skills are taught skills. They are quantifiable and are often learned in school, through certifications, or in previous work experience. Hard skills are specific to each job and are often the basis of job requirements.

Recruiters look for hard skills on your CV to gauge how well you may perform job duties. These job specific skills are especially important because of applicant tracking system (ATS) used to score job applications.

Hard skills are  CV keywords used by head hunters in their search for candidates online and Applicant Tracking Systems. For a CV to be highly visible, it should include the most important hard skills highlighted in the job description.

To identify hard skills, you should analyze the job description. Look specifically for required skills, skills that are mentioned first, or skills that are listed more than once, as those are likely high-priority to the hiring manager.

To display hard skills on your CV you can highlight the first most important skills in the introductory section of your CV in bullet form as part of your summary statement. Your hard skills should reflect in the experience and education section as a proof that you can actually excel at the skills you have listed.

Data engineering.
Database management.
Data mining.
Data visualization.
Web analytics.

Definition of Soft Skills and How to Apply it?

Soft skills are typically interpersonal people skills or desirable personality traits that revolve around character, teamwork, communication, time management, and work ethic.

Soft skills tend to be transferable between jobs or industries but are more difficult to quantify on a resume than hard skills. For instance “damage controller” and “adept mixer” can be used to describe you in the summary section of your CV. All soft skills should be specific, measurable, reliable and time bound (SMART).

Examples of soft skills include the following:

Effective communication skills.
Teamwork.
Dependability.
Adaptability.
Conflict resolution.
Flexibility.
Leadership.
Problem-solving.

A well grounded CV should be able to rightly mine and mix hard and soft skills to produce the desired results. Always remember that your certifications and technical grooming (Hard Skills) gives you the technical know how to work. This is basically what makes you a specialist in the field. But also remember that you are human and your personal traits (soft skills) distinguishes you from been a robot.
